According to Winnemucca, this was no mere myth but a genuine battle that unfolded. The sai-duka’a, red-haired giants, resided in the mountains near the Paiute nation and practiced cannibalism.
The Paiutes, weary of being the giants’ prey, confronted them in a three-year-long war. The final standoff occurred in Lovelock cave, where the Paiute people barricaded the entrances with brush and firewood, ultimately setting the giants ablaze.
