In the vast expanse of the ocean lies a realm shrouded in mystery and intrigue, where tales of unexplained phenomena and vanishing vessels have captured the human imagination for centuries. It’s a place where reality often blurs with legend, and where ordinary objects become relics of the unknown. Recently, a team of adventurous divers embarked on a journey into the depths, and what they found was a piece of history that had been lost to the sea for over six decades.
Shipwreck hunters Mike Barnett and Jimmy Gamsky are no strangers to uncovering hidden treasures beneath the waves. They rely on local stories and rumors to guide them to their next intriguing discovery. On this particular expedition, they set their course for an underwater object known as Chang’s wreck, located 57 nautical miles off the coast of Florida, just north of the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
Their quest led them to a series of plane crashes that occurred over 60 years ago, in July 1960, when the USS Saratoga, a US Navy aircraft carrier, sailed into these enigmatic waters. What followed was a string of unfortunate incidents, beginning with the crash of a strategic bomber piloted by William Anderson and his crew. Tragically, this incident claimed the lives of all aboard. Only three days later, another plane of the same type crashed into the flight deck, taking three more lives, including Commander Charles T. FR.
These ill-fated aircraft were A3 Sky Warriors, capable of carrying nuclear bombs, and they plunged into the ocean depths, seemingly unsalvageable and forgotten by history. Yet, their approximate location was thought to be near Chang’s wreck, which is where Mike and Jimmy set their sights.
Diving to a depth of 240 feet, with only 25 minutes of exploration time before resurfacing, the intrepid divers soon began to unravel the secrets of the submerged wreckage. They encountered the sharp edges of a plane wing and the detached cockpit, but there were no signs of human remains. The clock was ticking, and they had to return to the surface, their curiosity piqued.
Upon reuniting with pilot and combat veteran Jason Harris and military historian David O’Keefe, the divers reviewed their footage. The distinctive configuration of the A3 Sky Warrior cockpit, designed for three crew members, offered a crucial clue. It appeared that they had found one of the two lost Sky Warriors from the USS Saratoga, but the question remained: was it the jet flown by Captain Klier or the one flown by Commander FR?
A breakthrough occurred when the team tracked down a witness named Phil Wilcoxon, who had been on board the USS Saratoga at the time of the incidents. Phil possessed film footage captured on the fateful day, providing invaluable insights into the crashes. The footage showed the tail hook breaking, the desperate attempts to gain altitude, and the final moments before impact. It even revealed a crew member’s futile struggle to escape.
With this newfound evidence, Mike and Jimmy returned to Chang’s wreck for further investigation. They hoped to find crucial clues that would definitively identify the aircraft. Partially retracted wheels and tattered parachute materials would be telltale signs. As they descended once more into the depths, they discovered the long span of a wing, broken at the tip, and Port windows. Most tellingly, they spotted a tattered parachute silently drifting in the current. There was no doubt; this was the plane of Commander FR and his crew.
The divers made a poignant trip to Jacksonville to share their findings with Commander FR’s sons. Through archival research and the evidence uncovered in their dives, they could now confirm that the aircraft they found was indeed their father’s. They shared images of the cockpit, the landing gear, and the parachute materials, piecing together the tragic events of that fateful day.
For the sons of Commander FR, this discovery was bittersweet. It brought closure in some ways, yet it also reopened old wounds. Their father’s memory lives on, cherished and honored. As they reflect on the past and the sacrifices made by their father and countless others, they understand that some mysteries will never truly be closed.
In the depths of the ocean, where history and legend intertwine, stories like this one continue to emerge. Each dive into the unknown uncovers not just the past, but also the human stories behind these relics of the deep. The ocean, with its secrets and mysteries, remains a boundless source of fascination for those brave enough to explore its depths.
